VAT stands for Value-Added Tax. This is an indirect taxation on the consumption of goods and services supplied by vendors in the economy. This tax will be levied on the goods or services that are rendered by a Company, and will therefore not directly be deducted from income.
Companies in South Africa that are registered for VAT are obligated to add 14% to the price of the products and services they offer. This 14% that is taxed is payable to SARS as VAT. VAT is deductible from the majority of expenses (such as rental-and transportation fees).
